Serving older adults since she was 16, Janette has built a career rooted in compassion and connection as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Newton Village, a Cassia community in Newton, Iowa.
A Longtime Passion for Senior Care
Janette’s path into senior care began long before her first job. As a child, she spent many hours visiting care centers where her mother worked as an aide. These early experiences made a lasting impact, shaping her values, teaching her to treat older adults with empathy and respect. By the time she turned 16, Janette knew she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps, beginning her own caregiving journey as a nursing assistant.
Working with Heart at Newton Village
Years later, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the transitional care unit at Newton Village, Janette calls working with older adults rewarding.
“I like seeing people happy,” she says. “They have so much appreciation for what you do. It makes me feel good to make them happy.”
Her dedication shines through in the way she connects with residents, building bonds and offering support that goes beyond caregiving.
Meaningful Relationships
In fact, forming meaningful relationships is one of the most important parts of Janette’s role. She makes it a priority to truly get to know the residents and she shares a special bond with those in her care.
“I can forget my life outside and join in their life,” she says. “I lost my parents a long time ago. The residents have become family to me. It means a lot to be here with them.”
Her compassion and presence bring comfort to residents and create a strong sense of community.
A Day in the Life of a CNA
Janette’s typical day beings early. Starting her shift at 6 a.m., she first receives updates from the night shift staff and walking rounds to check in on the residents. Her morning routine includes helping residents with their morning routines as they get ready for breakfast and the day ahead.
Throughout the day, Janette assists with many tasks like showers, medications, activities and meeting the needs of residents as they arise.
“There are quite a few things they have us do every day,” Janette says.
Prioritizing Resident-Centered Care
Even with a full schedule, Janette appreciates that she and her team are encouraged to take time with residents—
something she sees as essential to quality care.
“We don’t have to hurry up and get them to breakfast,” she says. “No one complains about us taking too long to talk to a resident.”
This approach fosters trust and builds deeper connections between staff and residents.
Hard Work That’s Worth it
Of course, Janette recognizes that caregiving is hard work. But for her, it’s work with purpose. She encourages others who want to serve others to consider a career as a CNA.
“If your heart’s in it, it’s a great field to get into.”
Her experience shows how a compassionate heart, strong relationships, and a supportive work environment can turn caregiving into a meaningful career.
